Reviews
- Of course a lot depends on the system you're using. I'm running mid range, but to me this isn't a particularly good press. Seems flat and murky in the mids, lacking dynamics. But then the original source could be the same. Would be interested to hear the MOV.
- To my untrained ear, the MOV pressing sounds a little better than this. It's quieter, but I like the balance a bit more. This one is louder, althought you can definitely feel how "meatier" it is. It does sound a little bit more canned than the MOV pressing, but not too much. Overall, I'm happy with this. My MOV pressing had a defect on side two, so I'm glad I have a fully working copy of this classic album. Catherine Wheel is one of my favorite bands and I love most of the songs on this.
- Edited 5 months agoVery glad there is a readily available pressing of this on the market, but good grief is this bright. A 90s record, so likely baked in, and the CD never sounded great, but this is shrill for sure. Not sure where one reviewer got "meatier" from, not something I experience. Not bad - just toppy.
- Edited one year agoJust compared the MOV and this, and I'll take this hands down - loudness level is a tad lower, but it's way MEATIER and more balanced overall, the low end being more pronounced and the mids more defined and the soundstage, depth and air are as good as it gets - fantastic reissue !!!!
- Edited one year agoI've tried 3 different copies of this (from 2 different vendors), and 1 of the new reissue of Ferment, and all 4 have little scribble looking scratches on them. 2 copies of Chrome had them in the same place, at the end of Crank (A3) and well into Broken Head (A4). Terrible quality control from the plant on these as it appears many have the same problem.
I was sent replacements from the label, possibly from a later batch, that are scratch free. I'd love to know what the hell happened but am glad to have these scratch free reissues. They will probably be my go to copies because I don't want to risk damaging the originals. - I don't care what the source is, or any of that stuff... all I care about is having this masterpiece on vinyl, and that it both sounds GREAT, and was not overly expensive. Best I have heard this album ... and I can say it sounds way better to my ears than the CD ever did.
- I've ordered two from Amazon and both have quite a few pops and crackles even after cleaning. Other than that, it sounds pretty good. Not sure if I should try for a 3rd.
- Crackling and ticks caused by tiny scratches that you can see under light.
I am so fed up with new vinyl having these! Feel ripped off paying $40 for a single LP with flaws. Not looking forward to getting Ferment in the mail. - The MOVs were sourced from CD. These reissues sourced from the original masters. End of sonic debate.
