Keeping with the illusion of Spinal Tap being a real band, the 1984 editions of this soundtrack, and some later LP and CD versions, are presented as a sort of "best-of" compilation, complete with sources and dates from non-existent singles and albums (circa 1965 to 1982). The Polymer label also appears on the jacket and labels, which was the fictitious label used in "This Is Spinal Tap", an obvious parody and homage to Polydor, which was also the label that released this soundtrack in North America.
Rob Reiner, the director of "This Is Spinal Tap," stated on Letterman in 1984 that the title of the album is actually "Smell The Glove" and that the cover is black because the record company called the original cover "sexist." There are some pictures circulating on the Internet that show mockups of the "original" cover.
